Floating islands at Keibul Lamjao National Park
The freshwater Loktak lake in Manipur is close to the Keibul Lamjao National park, the only habitat in the world of the critically endangered brow-antlered deer.
The lake is known for the so-called floating islands which are lumps of hardened algae not anchored to the lake bed. The fisherfolk build huts on such islands and allow the organic platforms to drift freely across the lake.
Unfortunately, due to insurgency in Manipur it is difficult to access the core area of the national park.
